"A collection of 10 rectangular Japanese cedar bungalows with Scandinavian furnishings (...) is a cocoon of comfort."
Inspired by the traditional island warehouses, Furnas Lake Villas are surprising, not only for the perfect way they fit into the landscape but also because of the services and activities they provide.
Built by Manuel’s architect brother-in-law, Fernando Monteiro, the low-level rectangular villas are made from locally grown Japanese cedar wood, the trees having been introduced to the islands 200 years ago. The use of the wood cladding allows the buildings to stand out architecturally, yet at the same time blend in with the surrounding landscape, particularly as they weather over time.
This is a feast for the eyes, a balm for the senses, an anti-stress pill, a haven without equal in a location to match. The Furnas Lake Villas is a bold venture which has transformed an old cattle farm into an ecological sanctuary.
Staying at Furnas Lake Villas is like coming back to your roots, to our origins, but in a modern, present day context. We became known around the world by the high modern standards while respecting and restoring nature.
Furnas Lake Villas was built by our architect brother-in-law, Fernando Monteiro, and set in the mystical volcanic Furnas basin;
The 10 modern villas are made from locally grown Japanese cedar wood, the trees having been introduced to the islands 200 years ago. Inspired by local rustic granaries, which were purposely raised above the humid ground, the rectangularly shaped villas are set on a series of low concrete pillars above a cooling, reflective pond.
The concept was elaborately discussed, focusing on all details that make the resort stand out architecturally, but at the same time creating a stunning blend with the beautiful surroundings.
The interior design also follows the minimalistic Scandinavian style through simplicity, attractiveness, and functionality. Neutral colors, large south facing windows, a contemporary fireplace in the living area, a fully equipped kitchen are just some of the elements that stand out of the traditional Portuguese design trend.
Furnas Lake Villas is more than our tourist eco-paradise and one of the boldest tourist and architectural projects on the island of São Miguel, it is our family’s project!
